Himachal Pradesh is home to a number of pilgrimage sites and temples, and almost every temple has a fair, festival or mythological story. Shri Naina Devi Temple is one of such sacred places in this Hilly Indian state.

Situated on a hilltop, on an altitude of 1177 meters, in the Bilaspur District of Himachal Pradesh, this temple is one of the most popular places of worship in the state. Several mythological stories of this shrine.

Mythology: According to Hindu mythology, Lord Shiva's consort Sati jumped into the sacrificial fire to avenge an insult to her husband by her father Daksha Prajapati. The distraught Shiva picked corpse of Sati and started his Taandav (horrified) dance that shook Heaven and Earth. In order to calm down Shiva's wrath, Lord Vishnu intervened and cut the Sati's corpse into fifty-one pieces with his Chakra. All the places where Sati's limbs fell on earth are known as Shakti Peeths today. According to the floklores, Goddess Sati's eyes fell at the Shri Naina Devi temple.
According to another belief the temple is on a Gujar boy named Naina. There is saying that once the boy was once grazing his cattle when he observed that his cows are showering milk from their udders on a white stone. One night in his dream, he saw Goddess Durga telling him that the stone is her Pindi. Naina told about the strange happening and his dream to Raja Bir Chand. Raja proceeded to the spot with the Gujar boy and saw there an image of Goddess near the stone. He then built a temple on that spot and named it after the name of Naina.
There is another story in which Guru Gobind Singh Ji, the 10th Guru of the Sikhs, performed a Sacrificial Yagna in Shri Naina Devi to seek blessings of the Goddess before embarking on his military campaign against Mughals in 1756. It is believed that the Goddess appeared in person from the fire and touched Guru Gobind Singh's sword with which he successfully defeated the Mughals.
